Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles
Symbolism Revealed
Hello lovelies! Time for more fun and adventures in anime today we are visiting one of Clamps many works Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles! We will be exploring some of the symbolism that recides in Tsubasa I'm only going to go over four of them though I'm sure there is many more.
Princess Sakura - Sakura Blossoms
Princess Sakura
Sakura Blossoms
Sakura blossoms have been revered for centuries in Japan. Sakura blossoms are a symbol of the beauty and fragility of life. It also is a symbol of renewal and new beginnings. This little blossom that shares the same name as the princess is seen many times throughout the anime and ovas. Sakura blossoms are the perfect symbol for Princess Sakura her soul is absolutely beautiful much like the blossom but with all her feathers scattered her life hangs in the balance just like the fragile flower that only blooms for two weeks. Now for new beginnings the Sakura blossom can also be a symbol of the foursomes journey each starting a new beginning in their lives together through this journey to find Princess Sakura's feathers in which none of them will be quite the same again.
Syaroan - Yin & Yang
Syaroan- Yin & Yang
Two halves that complete a whole two competing forces that are always in conflict with each other that are responsible in keeping things in balance. Yin and Yang comes from China its a very old symbol and we can see these two forces everywhere wherever there is one there must be another to counteract and keeps things at balance according to Yin and Yang.
This symbol holds most meaning in Tsubasa with the character Syaroan. We know from the beginning that there is two Syaroans from the opening. One is the real Syaroan the other is just a clone of the original. The original Syaroan put half of his soul in the clone to prevent it from being under the control of Fei Wong Reed. However it still didn't stop him from going along with his evil plan. One Syaroan is Yin the other is Yang but once the seal is broken the other half returns to the original Syaroan. Creating a in balance one must die in order to restore balance the original Syaroan must stop his cold soulless counterpart who is now under full control of Fei Wong Reed to continue finding Sakura's feathers otherwise all will be losted.
Kurogane -Silver Dragon (Ginyru)
Kurogane - Silver Dragon (Ginyru)
The symbol that best defines Kurogane is the Silver Dragon or Ginyru. Kurogane is a ninja from feudal Japan in that time warriors believed that their swords were a extension of their souls so his sword would be the best defining symbol of Kurogane.
His sword is the ultimate symbol of him being a proud warrior and since its a family heirloom a sign of his heritage and his parents that are no longer alive.
However Kurogane also has a strong association with the actual silver dragon that is depicted on his sword. The silver dragon has a strong connection with the moon and live by lunar cycles they have powerful healing abilities plus they have a strong association with a female warrior or mother goddess. Silver dragons are also said to be wise and intuitive. When Kurogane first appears we see him with his sword with the moon in the background looking for someone to fight him. He also has a black crescent moon on his head band and leg. Princess Tomoyo though not a warrior is a miko and both her and Kurogane have a strong connection he is very loyal to her and calls her his master in the final OVA. Kurogane doesn't have obvious healing powers but he still heals through Kurogane and Fai's friendship he was able to heal Fai of his pain towards his past. In the anime Fai was always faking a smile and Kurogane was too intuitive to not see it even calling him out on it on several occasions he also noticed when Syaroan was acting strange and his problem with his right eye. You definitely can't hide anything from him also though he seems like he's all brute strength he is wise always saying some wisdom when it needs to be said.
Fai D Flourite - The Phoenix
Fai D Flourite - The Phoenix
The Phoenix has been around for thousands of years origins possibly dating back all the way to the ancient Egyptians with the Bennu. The Phoenix is a legendary bird of flame living for centuries til the day it makes a nest and burns itself in flame being reborn a new. We see this symbol on Fai's back in the beginning of the anime as a tattoo and also on his coat. In the first place they visited his kundan which is like a guardian spirit in that world resembled a lot like the Phoenix as well.
Fai's hidden sadness
Fai's transition
Fai never died but was close to death but Fai even though was happy go lucky smiled all the time wouldn't think he had a care in the world. Had a extremely painful past that he was running away from trying to find renewal in all the wrong ways by trying to run and forget the past. His smile and happiness was a illusion to a truly tortured soul within. In the events of the OVAS and beyond you could say was his death and rebirth. He lost that fake happiness and now had nothing left when becoming a vampire he lost all will to live but when confronted with his past and Kurogane's further sacrifice he seemed to change back but this time when he smiled he was truly happy.
I hope you all enjoyed the wonderful adventures exploring some of the symbolism in Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles! Next up I'm going to do symbolism in Akatasuki no Yona and then reviews on both of them so stay tuned! Until next time!
