Do you know what one of my favorite parts of my daily routine is? Besides waking up to snuggles from my dog and my first cup of coffee, I love coming home at the end of the day and taking off my makeup.
While most of us who wear makeup love experimenting with and looking good in it, taking it off at the end of the night is truly one of the best feelings ever. However, sometimes, we can get lazy and not want to take off our makeup, so we head straight to bed.
Whether you already know this or not, it’s worth reminding yourself just how crucial it is that you take your makeup off at the end of the day, especially before bed. While nothing horrible will happen if you accidentally forget to take off your makeup before falling asleep or party a little too hard and need to hit your pillow right when you get home, you should avoid doing that as often as possible.
Sleeping in makeup can lead to clogged pores, trap dirt, debris, and chemicals on your skin, and lead to acne, dryness, irritation around the eyes, and even premature aging.
Plus, if you sleep with your makeup on, you’re not allowing your skin to renew itself and can’t reap the benefits of any nighttime skincare products.
Some people still see makeup remover wipes as the best way of removing makeup. Sure, they’re great for a quick fix and nights when you’re sick or have been out all evening and truly can’t fathom standing over a sink for more than one minute.
But makeup wipes tend to have a lot of extra fragrances and ingredients that can irritate your skin over time.
However, there are better, more beneficial, and thorough ways to remove your makeup so that your skin can get the most out of your nighttime moisturizers and skincare products.
First, you want to ensure your hands are clean before removing your makeup and washing your face. Then, to remove your face makeup, use a nice brand of micellar water and a reusable cloth or some oil-based cleansing balm to get the job done. Gently scrubbing these products onto your skin will do a much better job of removing your makeup.

If you have oily skin prone to acne, you may want to use micellar water versus the oil-based cleanser.
However, if you have on “full glam” or heavy makeup, oil-based cleansers and balms are a better option for melting down the makeup on your face.
The key to effectively taking your makeup off in a way that’s beneficial to your skin is using effective yet gentle products, not being too rough with your scrubbing or wiping, and making sure you get all your makeup off.
If you have waterproof eye makeup on or were wearing a lot of eye shadow and lash glue, you should take some micellar water, soak a cotton pad or reusable cloth in it, and hold it up against your eyelids for around 20 seconds. Then, gently wipe away the remaining eye makeup.
If you weren’t wearing makeup throughout the day, you usually only have to cleanse once during your nighttime skincare routine.
But if you’ve been wearing makeup, it’s a good idea to double cleanse. Double cleansing ensures you’ve gotten rid of all the leftover debris from your makeup and your skin is squeaky clean.
Follow your makeup-removing cleanser with a more gentle, hydrating cleanser for some extra reassurance.
Finally, follow the rest of your nighttime skincare routine! It’s a good idea to tone your skin after wearing makeup, then put on your go-to serums, eye creams, moisturizers, etc.
There you have it: an effective guide to removing your makeup that beats using single-use makeup wipes by a landslide. Enjoy!
